monopoly

n.獨佔;專賣;壟斷 [exclusive control of a commodity or service in a particular market, or a control that makes possible the manipulation of prices. Compare duopoly , oligopoly .]

一般指唯一的賣者在一個或多個市場，通過一個或多個階段，面對競爭性的消費者；與買者壟斷（en:Monopsony）相反。壟斷者在市場上，能夠隨意調節價格與產量（不能同時調節）。

一般認為，壟斷的基本原因是進入障礙，也就是說，壟斷者能在其市場上保持唯一賣者的地位，是因為其它企業不能進入市場並與之競爭。進入障礙的產生壟斷的原因有三個：

* 資源壟斷：關鍵資源由一家企業擁有（如：無線電視的配音業）。
* 政府創造壟斷：政府給與一家企業排他性地生產某種產品或勞務的權利。

ps. 如果你有上過一些電影概論的課，你應該會聽過《波坦金戰艦》(英文翻成： The Battleship Potemkin )這部片，那一是部在1925年俄國的電影，當時仍是黑白且無聲的電影，不過《波坦金戰艦》這部片卻非常的紅。導演使用了很多，也應該說是最早期的montage的手法。

劃時代的《波坦金戰艦》

1925年由艾森斯坦執導的《波坦金戰艦》，在當年廣受佳評，並被視為蘇聯蒙太奇運動的經典作品。《波》片不論在敘事題材、剪接手法、場面調度上，皆展現了蘇聯蒙太奇的創作精神及美學特色。

蒙太奇電影通常以革命運動的起義、罷工和其他一些鬥爭事件，作為題材的選擇，《波坦金戰艦》為1905年著名的革命歷史故事，描述戰艦上的水手士兵因上層軍官不理會食肉已腐爛，仍供給士兵食用，在抗議無效之下起而叛亂。影片一開始，便以海浪拍擊岩岸和列寧的宣言「為革命而革命」的插卡字幕互剪，開啟了後段壯志滿懷的革命行動。

蒙太奇的導演深信，倘若風格的技巧能夠製造最大的衝突及爆炸性，將能更強烈地影響觀眾，故他們經常以一種鮮明、充滿能量的方式並列鏡頭。一般而言，蒙太奇電影比起同時期的其他型態電影拍製，包含更多的鏡頭數量，蒙太奇工作者經常將一個單獨的動作，分割成兩個或以上的鏡頭，這些鏡頭牽涉到時間、空間、畫面的緊張狀態。

其中最著名的例證， 是片中一場戲裡正在洗盤子的水手，憤怒地將盤子砸碎一個，這個可能只發生在一剎那的姿態，被分散地以十個鏡頭表現出來，這樣的重疊鏡頭，更加強調了叛變的行動，並且透過矛盾的空間配置，與錯亂的運動方向，觀眾被迫去建構一個一致的時空。

Moral (中文翻成道德)applies to personal character and behavior, especially sexual conduct . moral比較強調的是個人的行為，比較多的情況下會特只性方面。

Ethical (中文翻成倫理)stresses idealistic standards of right and wrong. ethical比較強調的是整體的社會、文化的標準。

ex. Corporal punishment is an ethical issue of education.

morale

n.士氣 [emotional or mental condition with respect to cheerfulness, confidence, zeal, etc., esp. in the face of opposition, hardship, etc.]

ps.中文翻成士氣，morale的意思是指當你面對困難、挑戰的時候，所有擁有情緒上或者精神上的信心、熱情、或者振奮的狀態，這就是morale的概念。

ex. Frequent failures did not affect his morale.
屢次失敗都沒有使他洩氣。

字源：一開始morale也是當作道德的行為(good conduct)，他是從古法文的moral的陰性morale來的，而在1831年的時候開始指軍隊中的confidence，你可以把這個字聯想成軍隊有士氣是種good conduct來方便記憶。

moralistic

moratorium

ps. moratorium的概念有點不好理解，必須先抓到它的核心概念，就是postpone, suspension。 moratorium 是個很正式的用語，可以用在nation、law, finance, bank上。 比方說武器採購案在政黨輪替後有了不同的意見，所以先被supspension起來了，暫緩付款，這個suspension的動作就叫moratorium。或者政府授權讓債務人可以延後付款給銀行，這個suspension, postpone也叫做moratorium。或是挖石油挖到一半，石油公司被環保團體抗議，而政府要求暫止挖油，這也叫做moratorium.

字源：1875, 原政府授權讓債務人可以延後付款給銀行 from L. morari "to delay," from mora "pause, delay," originally "standing there thinking."
