To dear committee,
I am from Malaysia where we have three main languages - Mandarin, English and Malay- using in daily communication. Because of this environment I am particularly interested in learning language, and in addition to these three languages I learned basic Korean and French by myself. I also love studying English literature, plus traveling is my favorite activity which helps me understand much more insight of myself. Combining all the factors I consider your program is the best destination of next stop in my life journey after high school. I sincerely wish I can have the opportunity to study in the Department of English Language and Literature at XXXX University.
English is special to me. Although I have a Chinese background, I learned English first at the age of four before formal Chinese language training. In the kindergarten, I loved how the teachers played language with me. Spelling test, quiz, and scrabble games triggered my deep interest in language study. Therefore my scores to language-associated subjects were always better than other subjects. While my Chinese learning came later at the age of seven, I demonstrated a high potential in learning language during the time in primary school. My essays written in Chinese have been picked up and published on local newspaper several times.
A complicated love-hate relationship between me and English literature occurred during the early time in high school. Until I met tuition teacher I felt English literature, especially poem, was boring. However she patiently explained, illustrated, and demonstrated the scenarios, which leading me into the beautiful world of poem, and opening my mind. Since then I realized studying poem was so great. My favorite poem is “Sonnet 18” written by William Shakespeare, in which there was one line I especially like; “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” Additionally, there is an imagery poem which I adore very much. That is the poem - “The Monsoon History” - describing a lifetime of Baba and Nyonya in Malaysia. As I read these poems, I can touch the burning pulse from my heart, and my mind could go back to that lovely scene in the poems, accompanying with the background music.
Traveling and exploring diverse cultures are among the top of my interests. Traveling always motivates me to learn more because I would have to communicate with different people with different languages on the road. Besides Mandarin, English and Malay, I learned basic Korean and French all by myself with online resources. I am longing to enter a linguistic center for a long time, and therefore I am very appreciated of having the precious opportunity to study at College of Foreign Languages in XXX University.
Since I am interested in English literature, I would like to advance my understanding in the subjects ranging from English grammar and vocabulary to wring poems and stories when I study in XXX University. Your program provides a long list of interesting courses such as “Greek and Roman Mythology for English Department”. And “Drama studies and poetry of the Blues” has already caught my eyes. Needless to say, I am so impressed by the foresight of your Department of English; to prepare students to be creative, critical and productive in English. And I do believe this principle will motivate myself and help me achieve my goal of learning.
As an 18-year-old girl, it may be too soon to answer what would be my career after having a Bachelor degree. But I think I am on the right track, and language interpretation would be one of my job choices. On the other hand, I could either do tourist guide or writing as my job. I have no doubt that the English courses at your program can enhance my confidence in speaking and writing.
Finally, it would be my tremendous honor to study in XXX University, since not only your program has excellent reputation and provides great resources for me to build up professional skills, but also your program offers wonderful culture exploration. Thank you very much for your consideration, I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
