from wiki: A cloister (from Latin claustrum, "enclosure") is a rectangular open space surrounded by covered walks or open galleries , with open arcades on the inner side, running along the walls of buildings and forming a quadrangle or garth.

你可以看到上圖中，有個四方形的area，包回這個area的path or 說是走廊，就叫cloister。也因此才跟close這字根有關，因為這path被關在某個區域中。 後來cloister也可指修道院，or與世隔絕的生活。
